Dental Day at Koning Sport Horses

Dental Day at Koning Sport Horses 🦷🐴

Today was a busy but important morning at the yard, as all of the Koning Sport Horses were attended to by our trusted equine dentists, Sharon and Adam Cooper. In total, 5 horses were seen for their routine dental checks, with our vet Latta on hand to assist the more nervous youngsters and Charlie was receiving a follow up.

💫 Youngsters
It's vital to keep on top of the babies' teeth as they erupt new ones, and today highlighted why:

  • Koning Gemera (2YO) had two wolf teeth removed, which will make him far more comfortable in the future.
  • Koning Jesko (3YO) needed a tidy-up, and even managed to drop a cap right into Sharon's hand!
  • Cassionora GF (3YO) had some impacted feed causing discomfort, but Adam removed it all so his big teeth can now come through properly.

💫 Older Horses

  • Charlie Brown (23YO) had his operation site checked and re-packed and is thankfully healing well.
  • Sadly, Timo (25YO) has been diagnosed with EOTRH (Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis) – a painful, progressive dental condition in older horses. He has two fractured/missing teeth and will need them all removed. At 25 years old, this presents some very hard decisions ahead 💔.

We are incredibly grateful to Sharon, Adam, Latta, and the team for making the morning run smoothly, and also to DW Equestrian Freelance Groom for tidying up all the boys' manes while they were in.

Keeping on top of dental care is such an important part of equine management, and days like today remind us just how much happier and healthier our horses are with regular attention.
